Summer Celebration of the
150th Birthday of Minnesota!

May 8, 2008 celebrates the 150th anniversary of statehood for Minnesota. And also in May Elim Lutheran Church celebrates their 154th anniversary.

To celebrate the significant role SCANDIA has played in creating Minnesota, the annual Elim Art Show will also add ARTIFACTS! Share Great Grandmothers crocheted table cloth; Uncle Iver’s clock shelf; the toys made by Grandpa during the depression, Mom’s wedding dress, the Sunday china set painted by your parents... whatever is special in your family that also tells part of your family story.

The Art Show ( open to ALL ages) will be displayed at Elim from May 4 thru 31. The Artifact display will be displayed at Gammelgarden Museum May 11-17.

"Dancing the Cows Home" by Sara deLuca
Sara De Luca is the author of the Minnesota Historical Society award-winning childhood memoir, Dancing the Cows Home. The book traces De Luca's childhood on a dairy farm in Polk County, western Wisconsin in the early 1950s. Her story has two especially powerful threads. One is a compelling portrayal of changing rural life at mid-century: she presents the experiences of a family headed by a strong-willed Norwegian-American mother who loved the stability of dairy farming and an alternately nurturing and angry Danish-American father who felt enslaved by his land and cows. In addition, Sara, who is an identical twin, offers an unusual coming-of-age story. She shows readers how she unraveled her own identity, struggling to gain a sense of self in opposition to her twin, a talented musician. Sara, “the quiet twin,” narrates the reminiscence with pride and humor as well as a gentle sense of loss.
